Academy Awards Recap
The 81st Annual Academy Awards was held at the Theatre in Hollywood where Hugh Jackman hosted it. Jackman spiced up his emcee duties by performing a little song and dance but was outdone by both the wit of Steve Martin and Tina Fey as they presented the scriptwriting awards and Beyonce and Queen Latifah musical performances.
The big winner of this year’s Academy Awards was Slumdog Millionaire with a resounding eight nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. However, Slumdog Millionaire was not nominated for any of the acting categories, which allowed a little diversity.
Lead Actor went to Sean Penn (Milk) which upset many Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) fans and Kate Winslet (The Reader) won Best Actress with Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.
One of my favorite nominations of the night was when Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) was awarded Best supporting Actor, a much-awaited win for many Joker fans. All the movie posters from the Academy-Award winning movies can be found here.
