The Power of Movies

Posted on February 5, 2009 by admin | 1 Comment

There is a certain power that only movies can harness. Let me explain. Movies posses the power to take you into a world of characters, you learn to know them, to love them, or to hate them. They will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions and then land you in a place you might not have guessed you would end up in from the start. They take you into a place where you really care about the character and want them to succeed.

Take for instance the movie ‘the pursuit of happiness’ a movie starring will smith about a man who is plagued with poverty strives to make a living for his wife and his son when things start to fall apart.  His wife leaves him, he is evicted, and is forced to go from homeless shelter to homeless shelter with his son just to find somewhere to sleep. He then takes on an internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker training program firm. With sheer determination, hard work and the love and trust of his son he is able to rise above the obstacles and become a Wall Street legend. You want this man to succeed; you need this man to succeed. You will literally watch the characters grow and struggle. There is something very therapeutic about caring for other people and the movie screen does it in a way that is unmatched by any other media.

Another movie that comes to mind that is a beautiful example is ‘Gladiator’. It was an instant classic and is recommended to any who have failed to see it. You will hurt for this man who strives to avenge his murdered wife and son after being enslaved and sold as a gladiator. You fall in love with Russell Crowe’s character Maximus and you loath Joaquin Phoenix as the emperor of the Roman Empire. While it is not a heartwarming story, it will have you crying and laughing while keeping you on the edge of your seat.  Seeing characters that you love and admire will have you wanting to be like them and will influence the traits that you want to acquire in yourself.
